Ongoing Projects

Welfare Rights Coalition (WRC)

The WRC is made up of recipients and former recipients who are working to improve lives of welfare recipients in Hamilton County. We are the voice of those affected by welfare and welfare reform. We are the parents and the individuals who truly know what will get us out of poverty: jobs at livable wages along with quality child care, quality health care and quality housing all of which need to be affordable.

Stable Families Are Safe Families

Over-the-Rhine Block Clubs: a powerful force for change As residents of Over-the-Rhine we have been working hard to make our neighborhood a safe and welcoming place for people of all backgrounds. So far the city has been very uncooperative with us on those efforts. They have chosen to work with historically anti-resident groups, such as the OTR Chamber of Commerce. But we will make democracy work for us! Through our neighborhood block clubs we are building a powerful force for change in Over-the-Rhine and Cincinnati.

Central Vine Street Block Club

The Central Vine Street Block Club was founded by members of the Contact Center to work on issues in Central OTR and Vine Street. In December 2002 they won a hard fought campaign to expand and enforce the Drug-Free Zone around one of the neighborhood schools. They are currently working on the RESPECT Campaign, which is about police accountability and reducing the drug trafficking at "hotspots" in the neighborhood.

RESPECT Campaign earns respect from Police. Campaign secures foot patrols from the city for Over-the-Rhine.

Republic Street Block Club

The Republic Street Block Club has been working with the Contact Center to organize against the undemocratic Center City Plan and Development Corporation. The Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC) was started by Mayor Charlie Luken to implement the city's plan for Over-the- Rhine. Residents were not consulted along the way, and the board of directors on 3CDC is unrepresentative of the Over- the-Rhine neighborhood they are charged with developing. We know that the city's plans for Over-the-Rhine don't include us, so we are organizing to get our own plans for our neighborhood implemented. The first step to a truly diverse and mixed income neighborhood is to raise the income level of the people who already live here. We deserve quality low- income affordable housing and family friendly neighborhood businesses that employ our people.

Mohawk/McMicken Block Club

The Mohawk/McMicken Block Club is currently in its recruitment stage. Several long time Over-the-Rhine residents and dedicated leaders are doing outreach and holding events to bring more residents into the group.
